Photography Blogs I Follow

by Administrator

I follow approximately 300 feeds on my Google Reader and feel its a useful tool to gauge what’s happening in the world of photography and be exposed to creative new content, while learning a little culture and science. I have gone through all my feeds and picked out some of my favorite photography ones and organized them into categories as I see fit. This is a resource for emerging and old photographers and photojournalists and I hope you share it and link to it so my years of blogging knowledge doesn’t go to waste. The sites I read focus a lot more on photojournalism than on learning how to take cat photographs and this list reflects more of my interests than what is necessarily the best photography and photo advice on the internet. This is not a list of photo sites, so to speak and a lot of my favorite photographers do not blog and are therefore not included on this list. I also add a lot of tweets of interesting photographic stories I saw so check out my twitter for more of that. Please please please comment and let me know what you think of these sites or if you have any others please reply on twitter or in the comments because I always love new sites. Also if you yourself have such a site that fits this list, don’t feel bashful about adding it in the comments.

Photojournalism
Tim Hussin The best new(new meaning just out of school) photojournalist on the web. His essays go deep and he shows America’s true faces. I wish him the best of luck.
Picture Stories by Stephan Alvarez A National Geographic photographer I followed before I even used the internet through his beautiful cave photographs. He inspired me to want to be a spelunker as a child, partly because that would be the best title ever. He also helped lead a trip to Northern Uganda with a bunch of Tufts Exposure people that I know.
Zoriah Zoriah amazes me as he jumps across continents, prolifically covering wars and underground societies. He is an amazing photographer trying to largely supplement his magazine and newspaper gigs with independent online fundraisers. Definitely somebody worth supporting.
APhotoADay News Very good interviews and links to photojournalism essays.
Magnum Photo Blog Another blog that gives a professional look into the photojournalism industry. Not as raw as some other blogs though…
We’re Just Sayin: David Burnett More about politics and life than about his photography, but still he is a very famous professional photojournalist so I feel he deserves to go under this category. I’ll talk more about him when I do a run down of photo sites I like and for now will just call him unconventional, primarily because he is the guy with a 4×5 camera at the Olympics.
Brandon Kruse A staff photographer at the Palm Beach Post because Brandon is a very recent graduate he really understand how photography will need to integrate to survive.
A Little Too Fast: Michael Rubenstein Photojournalism from Mumbai, lots of honesty and outtakes.
Justin Mott Justin posts great essays from his base of Vietnam and from elsewhere in south east Asia. Cool style and someone I could really see having National Geographic stories next week.
The Wild Weird World of Sports: Sol Neelman A site to show off all the zany(yeah I said it) sports and activities people take part in.
Caffeine Haze, Nicotine Mist: Ikuru Kuwajimi An intense look into life in Eastern Europe. This site shows gritty homelessness and bizarre religious rituals like jumping into a hole in the ice shaped as a cross.
Wandering Light: Kevin German Kevin is another photojournalist based out of Vietnam with very personal photo essays.

“Photoblogs”
Mute Shots from Toronto. He adds a link to somebody else’s photography with every post.
GoTreadGo An interesting mix of toy camera shots that doesn’t have the run of the mill Urban Outfitters aesthetic that is so popular these days.
Ben Huff Ben lives in Alaska and I therefore love his photos, because I love cold weather photos. On a more serious note, he shows off a lot of his and his friends shots that have a beautiful “un-stuck up” style.
Sean Flannigan Although mostly wedding shots, the rest of his stuff is a very stylized, but not overdone digital tilt-shift style.
Shooting from the Hip: Scott Strazzante A staff photographer for the Chicago Tribune this blog focuses more on his personal work and the unpublished photos.
Organic Chemistry: Shawn Gust Shows off simple precise photography, both his and others.
The Life of M Great portraits of everyday people doing what they do.
Abbreviated Daylight: Ariel Zambelich Fresh modern and fun young photography.
David Wright Smooth and peaceful shots. Recently worked in Northern Uganda and should have some interesting shots of the trip over the coming weeks.
Matt Mallams A freelance photographer based in Southern California with culture and street shots.

Editorial and Portrait Photography
Clayton Hauck A day with Clay has some interesting portraits and doesn’t post too much so wont clog up your RSS readers.
Michael Eudenbach’s Blog Michael works extensively on outdoorsy editorial shoots for running, boating, cycling and other similar styles. His work is very professional and his blog gives insight into how the shoots are made possible.
Michael Sugrue Although he hasn’t posted since the New Year, his commercial photographs are pretty amazing and he gives lots of information about everything he posts.
Wonderful Machine Shows off a lot of great editorial portfolios for art buyers.
Daniel Root’s Blogtography Personal and behind the scene shots for everything from fancy Nike to family shoots.

Famous People Sort Of
A Photo Editor I’m pretty sure everyone who ever dreams of becoming a professional photographer follows him… He has all sorts of interesting insights into the real world of magazine photography.
Flak Photo The Today’s Flak Photo feature consistently presents diverse images about just about everything.
The Sartorialist Everybody knows this one, so I’m not sure whether its even worth putting on.

Photo Cooperatives
We Are MJR I’m not sure why they have stopped posting their weekly photo recaps, but their work is modern and a few of them still shoot with film, earning them extra points in my book. I guess if I had to sum the blog up in word work I would say, refreshing.
15×100 15×100 is a child of JPG Magazine friendships. The basic idea is they accept 100 photographers and everybody only gets to have up 15 shots at a time, hence the name. There is some very provocative work there and my favorites that you should check out are Skip Hunt, Llornce Rosanes, Struan Oglansby, Claudi Luthi, and Laura Boston-Thek.
The Exposure Project A good sized collection of different photo projects, with lots of commentary to get you thinking.
BagNewsNotes A very political look at the latest news imagery.
Hey Hot Shot Showcases and funds photography for emerging and young photographers. Pretty site design as well.

Internet Photography Magazines and Newspapers
Ground Truth the Blog for the Global Post I plan on talking a lot about the Global Post when I make a list of photography sites that are less blogs. If you haven’t already check out the Global Post, do. I see it as the future of independent international journalism in an attempt to free everyone from the monotony of always reading AP stories that are repeated everywhere and are unable to take the time to go deep.
Burn Magazine David Allan Harvey’s new child is bringing together international photographers and creating lots of conversation about the images in a critical manner usually missed on blogs. They are also offering a very progressive emerging photographers grant, that should create amazing new photography.
PDN Photo of the Day The sweetest news and editorial shots.
Verve Photo: A New Breed of Documentary Photographers Project by Geoffrey Hiller to bring together photojournalists and people doing new projects.

Food Photography Blogs
La Tartine Gourmande Exquisitely clean and immaculately lit shots that always make my mouth water. Plus she is Boston local, which increases the relevancy of her posts for me.

Film and Pinhole Photography
Mark Tweedie Photography I have always been a sucker for experimental pinhole photography and his is definitely worth checking out.
Sheila Bocchine The only professional pinhole portrait photographer that I know.
Pinholephilia old school wicked long exposures, I’m talking like months and months.
The Figital Revolution A fun blog that plays heavily on communism metaphors and shows off some “technology” to integrate film and digital.

Family and Friends
Stephen MacLellan My brother is also an expert printmaker. He doesn’t post enough, but I try my hardest to get him to.
Jon Creamer My old math teacher and dorm head is an amazing film photographer and loves good music.
Tufts University Photography Blog A developing project by the Tufts Photography people and me that will feature highlights of life at Tufts. Less the stuff that will go into promotional materials and more a rougher edge of Tufts. Still new… so stay tuned.
Jesse Edsell-Vetter One of my “Twitter Friends” who is hyper local and has been very supportive.
Tufts Exposure Our blog has yet to be used much, but give me us a few years and it will be flowering with content and amazingness.

Contest and Grants
Current Photo Contests This is the best source to find out about allllll the current photo contests from the snapshots ones to the fanciest professional ones. Everyone interested in entering contests should follow this one.
Photography Grants and Awards Mostly professional and highly competitive grants and awards, but I guess that just means the contests are more worth it.
Marketing Photos with Virginia Swanson This is a very useful job looking at contests, professional reviews, and grants that can aid in figuring out how to get your photos seen.

Multimedia
Jim MacMillan Jim is a Pullitzer Prize winning photographer who has worked very closely with Tufts Exposure program over the years. He is working to pave the way for new media and independent citizen journalism.
Derek Powazek The founder of JPG Magazine and a bunch of other media adventures, Derek is very well connected to the new media world and always has a wealth of valuable links.
Space Miner: Laura Miner The old head of JPG Magazine who started blogging when JPG went under the first time. She has been very helpful to me in the past.

Technology
Strobist I’ll be honest, I usually don’t read these posts, but think that someday maybe they will be useful. They do get me thinking about how I would light if I ever do start bothering with lighting.
Erik So Erik became famous recently because of his HDR shots of his backyard and the changing trees over the course of a year.

Fun
Photojojo Cute tips and ideas for what to do with your photography.
Photoshop Disasters Finding laughter and smiles from the royal screw ups of so many designers and editors.

Resources
The Committee to Protect Journalists Not a reassuring thing to follow if you are planning on working abroad for the first time soon, but it does give you the facts about where and why it is unsafe for media in some areas of the world.

People I wish Still Blogged and Still Follow Just in Case
NYCLondon He has by far the best large format pinhole shots I have ever seen, but hasn’t posted since 2006, so if he ever does upload again I’ll make sure to let the world know.
Mustafah Abdulaziz…
